Photography play

April 8, 2014

I think I have a tendency to overexpose images (and lose details in the highlights), so here’s a creative attempt to correctly expose for the brightest lit parts (and purposely underexpose the rest). Photo was taken in a pretty well lit room. I think the model looks serene… but she thinks it’s creepy. So maybe it’s creepily serene. Again with my Nikkor 50mm prime lens.

And here’s another experiment, this time this reverse (making a dark room light) and playing with movement.

And then this. Just because I really like flowers and no other reason at all.

Horns & Vids & Vimeo

February 28, 2014

I had the Vimeo staff picks stream open on my computer the other night and this video came out. Rad song, amazing video.

New creative space!

February 24, 2014

I recently sold my bedroom couch for $40 (thanks, Gumtree!) and purchased a new desk for exactly $40. Yes, I know it was weird to have a couch in my bedroom and it never got used because I also have a lounge room… Anyway, getting side tracked here.

The thing is I now have a dedicated computer desk in my room (for writing/blogging, photo editing and graphics design) and then a whole new desk just for painting and illustrating. It makes it so much easier to be creative when I don’t have to spend five minutes putting away all my other crap just to sketch something out.

And here are some little random things I’ve been working on lately from my new creative workspace!

‘New’ Twitter

February 19, 2014

Jebus, loving the ‘new’ Twitter design. New in single quotation marks because the functionality seems to be pretty much the same (correct me if I’m wrong) but the facelift is lovely and clean.

P.S. If you want to find out what I’m listening to and which mode of public transport is failing me right that second (also known as my tweets), follow me here.

Supergraph superawesome

February 18, 2014

Checked out Supergraph over the weekend. It was the festival’s first run and it was incredible!

It was held The Royal Exhibition Centre in Carlton Gardens (ahem, one of my favourite buildings in Melbourne), and the hall was dotted with cute and colourful stalls from artists and designers. There were prints, original pieces, sculptures, post cards, clothes, lights, piñatas and other beautiful oddities for sale. I don’t have much disposable income at the moment, so I went armed with what money I had to spare. Ended up purchasing a numbered print from an artist called Francesca Henry-Pierre from the Print Society, shipped all the way from London town… but it took me about ten rounds of the whole place to decide which one piece I wanted to get. Can’t wait for next year.

Photographer speed dating

February 15, 2014

Pause Fest (aka Australia’s answer to SXSW) is on this weekend, and I was fortunate enough to score a seat at The Loop‘s Photography Portfolio Masterclass.

Ever been speed dating? I haven’t, but I am pretty sure this was pretty similar in concept and totally awesome. Six amazing professional photographers at a table each, five extra chairs for budding snappers, and 30 minutes to get our portfolios critiqued. Some of attendees brought giant, beautiful printed portfolios, some were students with nothing at all. I brought my tablet with my online photography portfolio. We each had some time to explain our situation (current job, desired photography niche, career goals, yadda yadda yadda) to the mentor and we all received useful and targeted feedback. Even comments for other photographers in completely different stages of their careers mentally flagged some things that I need to watch out for.

Read more about it on The Loop’s blog here. And here’s a pic from their Instagram! See that girl in the sleeveless grey dress in the background of the bottom image? That’s me, demonstrating extremely bad posture.

Late-night illustrations

Zzzz… So sleep-deprived lately. Have been doing lots of doodles.

Happy New Year!

January 1, 2014

Hi peeps!

I am so pleased with how 2013 turned out. I won’t lie – there were many, many moments where I thought everything had taken a turn for the worst. Yet here I am, happier and more on track with where I want to be ultimately than I was last January.

Over the past twelve months I moved… TWICE. But after a horrible stint in an interesting share house, I’m now living in a giant apartment by myself that is my home base, my creative playground and my personal rancho relaxo.

I quit my job at Get Glossy because I felt that I wasn’t going anywhere career-wise and really missed the music industry. (Don’t get me wrong – I love that place and the team so much that I spent NYE with a few GG girls.)

It was also the year I decided to fully get into photography and learn how to use my camera properly. I’ve been lucky enough that the absolutely stunning, gorgeous and lovely girls at Two Halves have let me shoot them quite a few times. It’s been so rewarding watching their blog grow as my photography skills have been improving. In other creative news, I got back into painting, drawing and doodling after years of letting my art diaries go dusty.

I also had the chance to play two beautiful camping festivals and hit the recording studio with my band, Darts. Fingers, knees and eyes crossed that our album will be out this year!

Huge thanks to all the lovely folks who inspired, helped and worked with me in 2013. Looking forward to more exciting things to come in 2014! Enjoy this terrible, horrible ABBA video.

P.S. Sorry not sorry for the OTT cheesy post. It had to be done.

Mountains of Fun

December 27, 2013

Exciting times! I did the compilation album artwork for Higher Plains‘ December mix tape. Click above to listen.

Side note: Can I just say that I absolutely love drawing Japanese wave patterns but always regret it about five minutes into the piece? This drawing is only the size of my palm in real life… Pretty sure I went temporarily blind from all the tiny squiggles.

Band Photoshoot

December 18, 2013

Exciting times! I did another photo shoot this week – this time for a local Melbourne band in Brunswick. They didn’t quite look like Beyoncé but I’m super stoked with how they turned up. Will post up links when the band uses the promo shots.
