New role as Label Manager @ Shock

Announcement time! I started my new job as Label Manager at Shock Records a couple of weeks ago, and I couldn’t be more stoked.

While I’ve never had the exact job role as label manager, I feel like this position will be perfect for my experience and skills (both within the music industry, and outside). It’ll give me a chance to blend my love and passion for finding new music (Paper-Deer) with my skills in writing (pretty much every job I’ve held over the past few years, but I guess mostly Beat Magazine/Furst Media & Paper-Deer), marketing & promotions (Get Glossy, Paper-Deer, Valleyarm), client management (Get Glossy) and the nitty gritty of getting releases out (Valleyarm). As Label Manager, I’ll be working closely with Label Director Mick Tarbuk, and National Publicity & Promotions Manager Georgina Thompson.

P.S. As mentioned in an earlier post, I’ll unfortunately stop actively pushing Miasto Creative as a result of this. I do love photography though, so I’ll definitely do a few weekend photoshoots here and there for fun, but mostly for fashion. (Which I think translates to mostly Two Halves shoots – damnit, I love those two girls.)

Open House Melbourne’s most excited volunteer

…would possibly be me.

I am a huge nerrrd. I love things about architecture and history, and dinosaurs and space and literature. Unfortunately I haven’t found anything that really ticks off all those boxes, but Open House Melbourne definitely covers off Melbourne’s colourful history and marvellous architecture.

I will be a volunteer on the PR and Program Selling team, and colour me TICKLED PINK. If not for my enthusiasm, then for our amazing and intense volunteer uniform that matches my hair (ahem, Fudge Paintbox Raspberry Beret). Imma give Barbie a run for her money. Not 100% what I’ll be doing, but presumable wandering around, selling the official programs.

Give the Open House Melbourne crew some love on Facebook, Twitter and Insta. The non-profit initiative is part of the wider Open House Worldwide network. The event is over the weekend of July 26 and 27. Following the happenings with the hashtag #Curiocity.


Digital prophets are a thing apparently

And here’s AOL’s very own digital prophet: Shingy. David Shing is an Australian expat in NY who talks about all things digital, including brand identity and marketing. Stumbled across his ramblings while compiling blog content for Collabforge*, and found his excellent e-book on digital trends here. Key takeaways for me were:


Which is why engagement rates (clicks, plays), site duration times and bounce rates are more important than raw traffic rates (to me anyway).


Hence location-based initiatives. And a constant stream of people checking into The Croft Institute on Facebook with shitty images of their syringe drinks. Random brain fart: I don’t think Melbourne music venues leverage this enough.


Partnering up with fellow online identities (regardless of whether you/they are an online influencer, brand, blogger or media outlet) is perfect for sharing similar audiences, as well as stealing different fan bases (i.e. brands gaining more numbers within their secondary and tertiary target markets). The Get Glossy team actually did this really well for campaigns when I was working there.


Ten years ago, I would have baulked at the idea of strangers reading my tweets, double tapping my sketches on Instagram or reading my blog. Although I guess ten years ago my parents would have freaked out because I was still in high school.

* Side note, today was my very last day at Collabforge, and my last time working out of Hub Melbourne! Makes me a little sad but am excited about the new job. Also some kids came into the office for a morning workshop on collaboration, and a shy 8-year-old gave me this note. Melted my heart slightly.

Want my old job?!

Like I mentioned yesterday, I have a new job (huzzah) so my current contractor position is up for grabs.

If you’re a gun at copywriting, can tell the difference between a ‘twit’ and a ‘tweet’, and know your way around MailChimp… this might be for you. Main responsibilities are updating the various blogs, managing the social media channels and delivering monthly EDMs. Brownie points for photography skills/gear, graphic design know-how, video editing experience and events management.

An update on Miasto Creative (and my life)

Life never quite pans out the way I plan it.

I decided in mid-2013 that I was well and truly over working for consumer brands. Peddling eyeliner, tea bags and diapers to the masses is really not my thing. Don’t get me wrong, I loved working at Get Glossy. My clients were some of the loveliest people in the world. The GG team also knew me SO well that they played my favourite song (Pony by Genuwine) instead of singing ‘Happy Birthday’, and got me a sticky date pudding birthday ‘cake’ (because everyone knows that sticky date pudding is the best thing ever). How many office workers can say that?!

But I was sick of it. I was further and further away from my number one obsession (ahem, music). I quit and mapped out what the next 12 months of my life would look across my bedroom wall.


Plan A was to get another job in the music industry, and all I could really do to make this happen was to keep an eye out for jobs and network. The jumble of sticky notes pictured above was Plan B, my way of making a job for myself in the music industry if no one would hire me. This turned out to be Miasto Creative, which I officially got off the ground last month after a lot of time spent on setting up the site.

So obviously the universe decided to offer me a job back in music just after I launched Miasto Creative. I’m not going to complain about the timing though. I’m super excited about this new role, and I’m going to seriously roll back my time spent on Miasto Creative. I might do a couple of shoots here and there for fun if they come up. On the plus side, my photography skills have improved so much it embarrasses me to look at pictures I took six months ago.

Will blog about the new role when everything is locked in and I’ve actually started, so stay tuned.

And a little side note…

I’d also like to point out that I’ve spent October until now at Collabforge, working with some of the loveliest and nerdiest people on the planet. They are absolute sweethearts.

I haven’t blogged about Collabforge much because most of their work revolves around public policy, civic engagement and change management/collaboration within organisations… A far cry from the general creative chaotic companies I’ve worked for, but interestingly they’ve taught me so much. I’ve learnt about lean start-up methodologies, strategy (talking proper strategy here, not half-baked documents to please clients), management practices and problem solving methods. Newest shoot for Two Halves now up! We actually shot it in the foyer of a business tower in the city because the overall look was meant to be dressed up corporate wear, what with the beautiful tailored pants, a gorgeous flowy top and shiny loafers. Funnily enough, looking back at the pictures, it ended up being much more ‘rock chick’ (Kat’s words) with the dark burgundy lips and leather jacket. Totally love it.
